There are around 11500 Post Office Branches across the country, and you can visit your nearest one to carry out a number of banking transactions.

Cash withdrawal

Withdrawals can be made using your debit card and PIN. This type of withdrawal is similar to withdrawals using a cash machine in that your account balance is immediately updated with the amount you have withdrawn.

Your daily cash withdrawal card limit will still apply subject to the funds being available in your account.

The transaction will be authorised or declined by the Bank in the same way as a cash machine withdrawal.

If authorised, you will be handed the cash and provided with a printed receipt for the amount withdrawn including your updated account balance and remaining amount available within your daily cash withdrawal card limit. The printed receipt should be retained for your records as proof of the transaction.

Cash deposit

Paying cash into your account at a Post Office branch*

Using your debit card

The quickest and easiest way to pay cash into your account at a Post Office branch is by using your debit card. The cash will be counted and checked in your presence and once confirmed the cash will be credited to your account immediately. Please note that deposits made after 4pm will credit your account the next business day.

Using a pre-printed bank giro credit slip

Simply hand over the cash with the pre-printed personalised bank giro credit slip. The cash will be counted and checked in your presence and, once confirmed, the bank giro credit slip will be returned to you and the cash will be accepted by the Post Office.

It usually takes 1 business day after the day you make the payment for us to receive the funds from the Post Office using this method. It will take longer if you make the payment after the Post Office cut-off time for cash deposits using a bank giro credit slip which is 7pm.

You should be aware of the time it takes for us to receive these deposits if you are paying in to cover items such as cheques, direct debits or standing orders that are due to come off your account.

You will be provided with a printed receipt for the amount of your deposit and this should be retained for your records as proof of the transaction. This receipt will be essential should there be any dispute with the transaction.

Please note that due to different processing procedures, cash and cheques (including postal orders) need to be paid in on separate pre-printed personalised bank giro credit slips.

* Please note some Post Office branches cannot accept cash deposits in excess of £2000. If you anticipate paying in excess of this amount you should ask at the Post Office branch you wish to use if they can accept your transaction.

Cheque deposit

To pay cheques and postal orders into your account at a Post Office branch, you will need:

  • a pre-printed personalised bank giro credit slip for your account
  • a Post Office Service Cheque Deposit Envelope. Envelopes are available from any Post Office branch.

Cheques and postal orders must be payable to the account name on the pre-printed personalised bank giro credit slip and crossed ‘Account Payee’. They should be placed inside the deposit envelope with the fully completed bank giro credit slip. You should also complete all the information required on the front of the envelope.

The sealed envelope should be handed to the Post Office cashier. You will be provided with a printed receipt for the envelope and this should be retained for your records as proof that the envelope has been handed over to the Post Office branch. The sealed envelope will be sent onto the Bank for processing . The envelope is opened and the contents verified when received by the bank. It is not, at any point, opened by the Post Office.

It usually takes up to 2 business days after the day you hand the envelope to the Post Office branch to reach us. It will take longer if you make a deposit after the individual Post Office branch cut-off time. Please check with the Post Office branch you wish to use what their cut-off time is.

We will process the cheque in accordance with your account terms and conditions when we receive it. A cheque may take some time to clear. You should be aware of the time it takes for us to receive cheque deposits via the Post Office as well as the cheque clearing time if you are paying in to cover items such as cheques, direct debits or standing orders that are due to come off your account.

Please note that due to different processing procedures, cash and cheques (including postal orders) need to be paid in on separate pre-printed personalised bank giro credit slips.

Balance enquiry

Simply advise the Post Office cashier you wish to obtain an account balance using your debit card. The cashier will ask you to insert your card into the card reader. You will then be asked to input your PIN. The balance will be provided to you on a printed receipt.

Services for our business customers

Notes for coin exchange (Change Giving service) - by prior arrangement

This service is only available to Business customers who have completed an application form and been approved for a Change Giving Card. Please contact your Relationship Manager should you wish to apply for this service.

  • is intended for Business customers who have a requirement for change in excess of £100 per week.
  • is available at Post Office branches across the UK with prior arrangement.
  • is accessed using a ‘Change Giving Card’ issued by the Bank.
  • requires customers to identify in advance which Post Office branch they wish to use. All applications are submitted to the Post Office for approval.
  • has a maximum change facility of £2000 per day at any individual Post Office branch (subject to Post Office approval).
  • is supplied on a note for coin exchange basis only. No other payment method is allowed.
  • is only available to customers who produce their ‘Change Giving Card’.
  • allows for change in the unit quantities below or multiples thereof: -
£2 and £1 coins Units of £20 and £500
50p and 20p coins Units of £10 and £250
10p and 5p coins Units of £5 and £100
2p and 1p coins Units of £1 and £20
£5 notes can also be obtained in units of £500
  • has a charge. Charges at the prevailing rate will be debited to your account each month in arrears.

  • For cash deposit take your debit card or a personalised paying in slip.
  • For cheque deposits take a personalised paying in slip and Post Office Service Cheque Deposit Envelope. You can get the envelopes from any Post Office branch.
