Travel Disruption

Applicable to Clydesdale Bank travel insurance policies (purchased prior to 13th April 2010):

Chartis, who underwrite the Clydesdale Banks travel insurance policies, has taken the decision to regard the volcanic ash cloud over most of Europe as an adverse weather event. Consequently, the policy provisions relating to travel delay, abandoning your trip and missed departure apply.

How will it affect Travel policyholders?

For those policyholders waiting to go on holiday it means that they may be able to recover the costs of their trips or journeys that would not otherwise be recoverable from another source such as the airlines, tour operators, hotels etc.

For those stranded abroad it means they too may claim an amount dependant on the length of delay, for reimbursement towards, for example, additional accommodation costs.

Please be advised that where your holiday cannot be completed within the intended period of insurance, cover will be extended at no extra cost for up to 30 days. Valid claims will be paid and normal limits and conditions will apply under policies where the account was opened prior to 13th April 2010 and when the event began and under Retail policies purchased before 13th April 2010.

Normally this would not be an insured peril under most insurance policies, but given this extraordinary set of circumstances we thought it right to support our customers by regarding the cause as adverse weather, which is an insured peril.

As a Clydesdale Bank customer – what does this mean for me?

Cover is provided under section E1 – Travel Delay if your flight is delayed for 12 hours or more, a benefit will be paid.

Cover is provided under section E2 – Abandoning your trip if your flight is delayed for more than 24 hours. You are entitled to claim for pre-paid travel and accommodation expenses, pre-paid excursions, tours and activities which are non refundable from any other source, cover is provided. Please note that in the first instance, you have a duty to seek reimbursement from the airline, tour operator, accommodation provider etc for the costs you have paid wherever possible.

Cover is provided under section D – Missed departure if your pre-booked journey consists of two flights and the original flight is disrupted, thereby making it impossible for you to catch your connecting flight. Cover is provided for reasonable additional travel and accommodation costs incurred to continue with your pre-booked journey.

For cover limits applicable, please refer to your policy documentation.

How to make a claim upon your return

Due to the extreme nature of this event and the high level of calls being generated to the respective claims lines a dedicated web address,
http://www-400.chartisdirect.co.uk/volcanicash/ has been established to offer further advice and allow for the downloading of a claim form. The normal claims numbers can still be used, although we would highlight that waiting times on these lines are being affected due to the large number of calls.
