Savings limits

*The total Stocks and Shares ISA allowance for this tax year is £7,200. This will increase to £10,200 from 6 October 2009 for any person aged 50 whose birth date is before 06 April 1960. If you save into a cash ISA, the maximum stocks and shares ISA is £7,200 or £10,200 less any cash ISA savings.

Anyone aged 16 years or over is eligible to apply for a Cash ISA and for a Stocks and Shares ISA applicants must be 18 or over. You must be resident and ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom.

The value of an investment and any income from it may fall as well as rise. In the case of a Stocks and Shares ISA, the original investment is not guaranteed and you may not get back what you invested.

The value of any tax benefits to you depends on your individual circumstances, the Law and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) practice which are subject to change. The proceeds of an ISA are currently free from UK Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax.
