Timeline for buying a house

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage

How long will it take before you’re ready to move?

It takes, on average, 65 days from first interest to getting the keys to your first home.[1] But make sure you always remember this is only an average. There can be hold-ups. By knowing the home buying process you’ll give yourself the best chance of getting through it as quickly as possible. We’ve prepared this timeline to help you understand how long each part of the process might take. You can find more detailed information about the whole process using the menu above and the links below.

House hunt

Do your homework properly. Look at properties during the day and at night, and on weekdays and weekends.

It’s an emotional time, but try to remain rational when you’re making decisions.

Make an offer

Look at what other properties in the area have sold for, and how close to the asking price it was.

You may get a mortgage agreement (or decision) before you make an offer.

Make it official

Time to speak to your solicitor and if you have an offer in principle turn it into an actual mortgage.

This is an exciting time – keep on top of what needs completed and when.

The big move

Move when other people aren’t moving. Your removal firm may be less busy during the week and towards the start of the month.

Take pics of your meter readings on your phone. Then they’re easy to find to provide utility companies with readings.
