Whether you’re jetting off on a city break or an exotic holiday of a lifetime, here are some things to consider for getting the most from your budget:
Getting to that dream destination could cost less than you think. Shop around for deals. There are many comparison websites that could help find cheaper flights or accommodation options, rather than booking a package through a travel agent. Have a look at the hotels, apartments, campsites or resorts in your chosen area – there may be a cheaper option that suits your needs.
A search online for a ‘holiday packing checklist’ can provide detailed examples for what to take away on holiday with you. However, here are some basics to consider to get you on your way:
How long will you be staying for? What’s the rate of exchange? How expensive are goods and services in the place you’ll be visiting? Will you need any extras, just in case? Remember that cash withdrawals, and some credit or debit card transactions, can cost you money if you make them abroad. So think about what you need to spend, remembering to factor in the exchange rate. And always make the change before you leave the country.
It’s also worth thinking about how to transport your money. Cash and travellers’ cheques may be fine for short breaks, but if you’re going away for longer it’s worth thinking about a prepaid currency card.
Don’t go on holiday without travel insurance. You don’t want a superb experience spoiled by having to pay for any medical care – however slight – you might need while you’re away. Depending on your policy, travel insurance can be for single or multi-trip options and can cover UK, European and worldwide travel. It could also include emergency medical expenses in the UK and abroad and loss of travel and accommodation expenses if your trip is cancelled. It could also protect your baggage and belongings, travel documents and cash/travellers’ cheques.
If you’re going to be away for some time and withdrawing funds, your bank could be concerned about activity from overseas. So it’s best to let them know before you go.
