Visa and MasterCard have introduced "Verified by Visa" and "MasterCard SecureCode" to improve the security of your purchases via the Internet. Using a personal password, these payment services allow you to identify yourself as the owner of the debit or credit card - just like you would use a PIN at an ATM.
Once registered everytime you make a purchase at a participating online retailer, as part of the checkout process you’ll be presented with a ‘browser pop up’. To verify the transaction enter your password and click on submit. Without this password the transaction cannot be completed.
To ensure that all your cards are covered, you must register any debit and credit cards separately.
Find out more about online security at BankSafeOnline (opens in new window) (a website set-up by APACS, the UK Payments Association on behalf of its member banks).
The easiest and recommended process is to use the links below.
Please have your card to hand as during registration you will be asked to supply personal and card information.
If you register at www.cbonline.co.uk you will also be asked to create a Personal Assurance Message (PAM). This can be anything you want, it should be personal to you, but does not need to be secret and will appear each time you pay at a registered retailer. The PAM is your assurance that you are dealing with your card issuer and will be displayed on every occasion that you make an online purchase using SecureCode/Verified by Visa. You should always check to see that this message is displayed, as it confirms that the website asking for your password is genuine.

After a number of attempts over any period, as a security measure your card is locked and you will be suspended from undertaking any internet purchases at participating merchants until unlocked. If your card is locked - Contact our SecureCode Helpdesk on 08456 022 272.
NB: To prevent being locked – if you are unsure of your password, follow the instructions under “Forgot Your SecureCode”
Contact our SecureCode Helpdesk on 08456 022 272 as until your card is unlocked you will be suspended from shopping at any participating internet merchants.
If you’re unable to register for SecureCode, ensure the details provided are correct and ensure that the password selected fits the criteria. Make sure that you are taking the details from the latest card we have issued to you. If you are still experiencing problems contact our SecureCode Helpdesk on 08456 022 272.
We may allow you to opt-out of registration but not for all purchases. However, we would always recommend that you register when presented with the enrolment screen. If you choose not to register your purchase may be declined. Furthermore even if you don’t often use your debit card on the internet, we would strongly recommend registering for SecureCode as it will help to protect your card from being used fraudulently.
