Seasalt consolidates warehousing and creates 20 new jobs

29/06/2011

The continued success of Seasalt has prompted the award-winning Cornish fashion brand to consolidate its warehousing requirements with a Clydesdale Bank funded £1m purpose built facility at Treleigh Industrial Estate, Redruth, creating 20 new jobs.

The state-of-the-art 25,000 sq ft building with purpose designed racking, storage and retrieval is capable of stocking 30,000 boxes and replaces six smaller units previously located in Penryn.

Seasalt grew from a modest Penzance retail outlet selling government surplus clothing 30 years ago to a Cornish success story with over 200 staff, 12 shops, 300 other UK stockists and a thriving internet trade.

Director Neil Chadwick said: “Increased demand, particularly through internet sales meant a rethink about our warehousing needs. We have a range of storage at Kernick Business Park where we also have a weekend Sale Shop, but the volumes we are now dealing with has outgrown them.

“The realities of having separate units also meant that it wasn’t unusual, on a rainy day, to see our staff having to run between each unit with an umbrella in hand which is far from ideal. The new, single site facility sorts that problem and has a sophisticated IT system which handles the logistics for us and will have huge time and cost benefits.”

The £1m investment was supported by Clydesdale Bank where business partner Steve Tyers is very enthusiastic about the new development.

He said: “The new warehouse is strategically located close to the A30 and is ideal for servicing Seasalt’s own retail outlets as well as its mail order and internet business.

“It is very gratifying to see a South West business create a leading brand and have the vision and commitment to see it develop and grow. Seasalt are also making a real contribution to the local and regional economy both in terms of valuable exports out of the county and in generating new jobs for the area.”
