Clydesdale Bank’s New £20 Bank Notes Enter Circulation

19/10/2009

The first of Clydesdale Bank’s new world heritage bank notes will enter circulation today (Monday 19 October).  New £20 notes will be available Clydesdale Bank retail branches and the majority of ATMs across the country from 10am.

The £20 note features iconic images of the historic mill house New Lanark on one side and Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, on the other.

The remainder of the new banknote family will enter circulation on a phased basis.  Following the £20 note, the new £50 note will be launched on 2 November; the £5 note on 16 November; the £10 note on 30 November; and finally the £100 note on 15 December.  Clydesdale Bank’s new world heritage note collection showcases the best of Scotland’s heritage, people and culture and is the first time in over 20 years the Bank has launched a completely new set of notes.

Introduced to mark the year of the Homecoming, the front of each new note will honour a prominent and innovative Scot while the reverse will feature one of Scotland’s five World Heritage sites.

Clydesdale Bank is the largest issuer of notes in Scotland, with over £1.1bn in circulation in any given week.

Lynne Peacock, chief executive of Clydesdale Bank, said: “Clydesdale Bank has produced banknotes since its inception in 1838.  In the past, the Bank’s notes have portrayed various Scottish landscapes and buildings but, in 1971, we broke with tradition and introduced portraits of notable Scots to the notes.
”We are pleased the new banknote family reunites the two themes of Clydesdale’s banknote heritage of Scotland’s important locations and people – and for them to be released during the year of the Homecoming shows how proud the bank is of its Scottish roots.”

Aynsley Gough, education and access officer at New Lanark Heritage Village, said: “New Lanark is such an important part of Scotland’s history and we are delighted that Clydesdale Bank has recognised that and put it on the new £20 note.”

The new notes will be the first in the UK to use a new ‘depth image’ hologram security feature.

Collectable notes from the new collection were part of Clydesdale Bank’s recent auctions of rare and valuable bank notes, where a £1 note sold for £9,000 breaking the previous world record for the sale of a Scottish bank note. In total, across the two auctions, the Bank raised over £200,000 for charities across the UK.
