A new approach to dementia care signals success for Vida

A £5million purpose built centre of excellence in dementia care has been opened in Harrogate by Vida Healthcare, thanks to funding support from the Bank.

Designed by experts specialising in dementia care, the centre supports the needs of residents living with dementia in a creative environment that boasts innovative design features and facilities, such as landscaping and sensory gardens.

The 70–bed Vida Hall facility in Starbeck opened earlier this year, creating 70 jobs. Chris and James Rycroft, the father-and son team behind the venture, are now planning to open two new specialist dementia care homes in the Yorkshire area as part of an overall strategy to create five homes with a total of 500 places.

Company profile

Vida Healthcare’s approach includes providing specialist care which enables residents to reduce their dependency on medication, and working closely with a leading clinical psychologist specialising in cognitive stimulation therapy to pioneer a new treatment for mild dementia which reduces anxiety and drug dependency.

The aging demographics of our society mean that dementia care will become a growing part of the UK’s healthcare provision. Their commercial acumen and sector expertise mean experienced entrepreneurs; Chris and James, are well placed to develop these facilities, having already been involved in numerous business operations including the development of Belmont House care home at Starbeck which they later sold to Southern Cross.

How will the deal help to drive the business?

James said: “The performance of Vida Hall in terms of meeting demand and the delighted reaction from families, has re-affirmed our belief that we are offering a genuinely new and exciting approach in caring for older people.

“Funding is important for an ambitious scheme such as this and we’re pleased to have gained support from the Bank. They have been quick to understand and meet our needs at a time when many banks are still not lending to small businesses.”
